Smart Scaling
Scale out of positions proportionally across all accounts with one click. No mental math required.
What is Smart Scaling?
Smart scaling lets you close a fraction of your position (half or quarter) across all accounts simultaneously. TradingPlace calculates the correct number of contracts to close for each account based on its current position size.
The Problem It Solves
You have 5 accounts with different position sizes: 8, 4, 2, 3, and 6 contracts. You want to take profit on half. Manually calculating 4, 2, 1, 1.5, and 3 contracts - then entering each order - is slow and error-prone. Smart scaling does it instantly.
Sell Half
Closes 50% of your position in each account. TradingPlace rounds down to whole contracts.
| Current Position | Contracts Closed | Remaining |
|---|---|---|
| 8 contracts | 4 | 4 |
| 6 contracts | 3 | 3 |
| 4 contracts | 2 | 2 |
| 2 contracts | 1 | 1 |
| 1 contract | 0 (minimum 1 to close) | 1 |
Note: With 1 contract, Sell Half won't close anything because you can't close half a contract. Use Flatten to close single-contract positions.
Sell Quarter
Closes 25% of your position in each account. Also rounds down to whole contracts.
| Current Position | Contracts Closed | Remaining |
|---|---|---|
| 8 contracts | 2 | 6 |
| 6 contracts | 1 | 5 |
| 4 contracts | 1 | 3 |
| 3 contracts | 0 | 3 |
How to Use
- Enter a position using group execution
- When ready to take partial profit, click Sell Half or Sell Quarter
- TradingPlace calculates and executes the correct close orders for each account
- Repeat as needed to scale out further
Why This Matters in Fast Markets
When the market is moving quickly, you don't have time to:
- Check each account's position size
- Calculate half or quarter of each
- Enter close orders one by one
- Risk missing your target while doing math
Smart scaling eliminates this cognitive load. See your target hit, click one button, done. You stay focused on the market instead of spreadsheets.
Common Scaling Strategies
The Classic: Half at First Target
Enter full size. When price reaches your first target, Sell Half to lock in profit. Let the rest run with a trailing stop or to a second target.
Gradual Exit: Quarter at Each Level
Enter full size. Sell Quarter at each of four predetermined targets. This captures profit at multiple levels while keeping exposure for bigger moves.
Risk-Off: Sell Half Quickly
In volatile conditions, Sell Half early to reduce risk. If the trade continues working, you still have half on. If it reverses, you've already locked in gains.
